A Study of Leadership Styles of Head Nurses and their Job satisfaction

Abstract
In an attempt to study the leadership styles of head nurses and their job satisfaction, this survey was conducted from November 13 to 30 in 1982. The subjects for this study were 17 head nurses and 142 staff nurses working at Chonnam University Hospital.
The results are as follows:
1. Staff nurses working under human relations-oriented head nurses were more highly satisfied with their head nurses than those working under task-oriented ones(t=3.082, p<0.001).
2. Staff nurses¢¥ satisfaction with head nurses was in the following descending order of their styles: human relations and task-oriented style; human relations oriented style; task-oriented style; non-caring style(F=7.837, P<0.001).
3. Head nurses¢¥ job satisfaction was found to correlate positively with the following factors: degree of certainty of definition of nursing work, satisfaction with salary, adequacy of equipment¡¯s and facilities for nursing care, attitude of nursing administrators, patients¢¥ attitude toward nurses and social recognition of nurses(r=.4997-.6316, P=0.05).
